Aftershoot alternatives: 7 AI culling tools compared
Aftershoot is one of the most popular AI culling apps, and for many photographers it is a good choice. People look for alternatives for a few common reasons: the price of a subscription on top of everything else they pay for, wanting a one-time purchase, preferring a different review workflow, or wanting culling inside Lightroom without another app.
Below is a side-by-side comparison, then a short take on who each tool suits. We make PixPick, so it is on the list. We have tried to be fair, including about where PixPick falls short.

Where PixPick fits, honestly
Choose PixPick if
- you want culling only, at a low monthly price
- your photos must stay on your computer (client contracts, privacy, slow upload)
- you finish edits in Lightroom Classic or Capture One and just need ratings in XMP
- you shoot RAW on Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, OM System or Panasonic
Look elsewhere if
- you also want AI editing or retouching from the same tool (Aftershoot, FilterPixel, Imagen)
- you want a Lightroom plugin rather than a separate app (Excire Search, or Lightroom's own Assisted Culling)
- you want to pay once (Excire Foto, OptiCull lifetime)
- you need to pay by card today: PixPick currently takes WeChat Pay, with card payments being added
How to choose
- Decide where your photos may go. Local tools never upload the shoot; cloud tools need a fast connection and send your clients' photos to a server.
- Count what you actually need. If you only cull, a culling-only plan is far cheaper than an editing bundle.
- Check your editor. Make sure ratings arrive the way you work: XMP sidecars, a Lightroom plugin, or Capture One.
- Test on a real shoot. Every tool here has a trial. Run the same wedding or event through two of them and compare how many keepers you would change.
